Can a trolling motor power a pontoon boat?

I am interested in buying a "family" boat - just something to get us out on the water, enjoying the sun, etc. However, some of the local places (lakes in the state forest) allow only electric motors - no gasoline engines. In other words, a trolling motor. Of course, this is fine for a row boat or bass boat (for fishing), but can a trolling motor push a pontoon boat through the water? Thanks!
Please - boat experts only -- not just guesses. I'm already guessing :) SMILE!

No Snow At The Boat Show!

We had a few snowflakes last week that danced in on a frigid Canadian cold front that froze most of the USA. The sight of a few snowflakes in my backyard had me longing to head for the beach!  But since it's still cold on most of the sandy shores in my area, I did the next best thing.   I went to a huge boat show last weekend and I took my wife; wanting to share something special with her.   Big mistake!

It is a fisherman's dream to be surrounded by every type of fishing boat imaginable. Even if you're not one who likes to put a hook in the water, take a friend with you and you will have a lot of fun, if for no other reason than to shake your head and grimace at the prices involved in some of the water craft on display.

If however, you are a real angler, and enjoy any kind of fresh water fishing, there is a boat for you no matter what your preference.    There are Bass boats, Jon boats, dinghies, flat bottom boats, inflatable boats, pontoon boats and boats that look so ridiculous that it questions why they should even be allowed on the water.

Fishing is supposed to be fun.   It is always enjoyable for me because I don't purposely make an effort to fish exclusively for bass; therefore I don't really need a high tech, super powerful bass boat.     By nature I'm a lazy man and fishing for largemouth bass or even smallmouth bass seems too much like work, so I prefer a simpler kind of fishing vessel.   Recreational projects that require more than minimum effort and are expensive to pursue, are generally erased from my list of things I like to do.

I was really not in the market for a new boat, but the more I wandered down the aisles, enthralled by the latest in boating technology, the more my old boat seemed like a relic!  Unfortunately my wife was not experiencing the same vibrations that had me salivating as I saw a beautiful 21foot fishing craft with everything a fisherman could want.

My days of investing a lot of money is a boat are gone. I read somewhere that a boat is a hole in the water in which you throw your money.   I've had several boats and I know that statement to be true.   This one that I was drooling over only cost $48, 582. 00.   My wife wasn't nearly as cheerful after seeing that price tag.

If spending an enormous amount of money on something that will cart you around the river fast, then some of the big bass boats that have entered the market are just what you need to put a big dent in your wallet!  Some of the vessels that will take you up and down the river in search of the elusive bass hit the ceiling at well over $50,000. 00!  At a dollar a pound for fish, I would have to catch 50,000 fish for that boat to be economically feasible!

Not really wanting a new boat, I decided to test the boat buying waters by trying to explain to my wife why that new bathroom was just going to have to wait for a few years.   Not overly impressed by my argument that a new fishing craft would greatly improve my mental health, she replied that after we complete her bathroom project, we could possibly consider a boat the whole family, including grandkids would enjoy; a pontoon boat.

A boat that will comfortably seat six or more people is not my idea of an ideal fishing craft.   You can't zip down the river at 50 miles per hour on a houseboat wanna be!  It was a good thing that I wasn't really serious about boat shopping.   No matter what style of boat that catches your eye, it's not likely your spouse will understand its importance, especially after she recovers from sticker shock!

As boat shows go, this one was fantastic!  In addition to having just about every kind of boat known to man, this one had rows and rows of boating accessories that were designed to capture the heart of every red-blooded American boatman.

Besides GPS systems, fish finders, radar, VHF radios, audio systems, there were fresh water fishing reels, fresh water rods, tackle, as well as salt water rods and reels of every brand.   This was a little confusing for me because the nearest salt water is 7 hours away.

Last weekend at the boat show was a welcomed relief from the stranglehold this winter has had on most of us.   When arenas and civic centers are packed with boats, we know that spring is fast approaching!

How can I make a homemade outboard motor steering system for a pontoon boat?

I have built a 3 hull 8 man pontoon boat. It is 13' x 8'. It has three hull's and a wood framed platform 10' x 8'. There is a tiki hut framed canopy covering the platform with 3' high bamboo siding around the perimeter. There is wood framed benches running along the back and both sides. I have framed a 2" x 6" motor mount along the back of the hull's. I'm thinking of getting a 8 to 9.9 hp outboard motor for it. I have not the slightest clue how I'm going to steer this boat. There is a 3' low wall that runs along the back of the boat and the out board motor will mount about 2'-6" behind the captains seat. How can I connect a steering system or connect an extension to the throtle where I can steer the boat? Please help?

Choosing the Boat That is Right for you

What type of boat is best for my lifestyle?

Maybe you are an avid fisherman who spends endless summer days searching for that fish that will give you ultimate bragging rights, or want to spend summer afternoons slowly cruising with a group of friends on your pontoon, or possibly have a fascination for speed and water sports. Whatever your passion, there is a boat out there that is made specifically for your needs and desires. However it isn’t always easy to know exactly which boat you should choose. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the enormous variety of boat types and models. There are several different boat choices based on what they would be used for.

What will I use the boat for?

You should first decide what you anticipate using the boat for. There are boats for fishing, water sports, cruising, sailing, entertaining, or taking long trips. Some are designed for multiple purposes.

Once you know what you want to do with it, decide who you are going to be taking with you? You may not want a pontoon boat the fits 12 people if you are only going to be fishing with a buddy. You also don’t want to overload your boat because of safety.

Consider where you will be enjoying your boat; up and down the calm river, on a sheltered lake, or an open ocean with high waves and rough seas. If you will be taking trips you will want your boat to have a cabin.

Choosing the right engine for my boat:

Now consider the propulsion needed when deciding on an engine type. The horsepower and weight are very important factors in the performance of your boat. An engine that is not powerful enough will cause your boat to work harder than it should and lead to a great deal of maintenance and excess use of fuel. You need to consider the size and weight of your boat, including gear and passengers. There are six different propulsion types with varying factors to consider when choosing a system for your boat.

Outboard Motors (2 types)

Outboard motors are detachable and mounted on the stern of the boat, with horsepower ranging from 1HP to over 300HP. These engines can be used in all types of water. The 2 types of outboard motors are 2 stroke and 4 stroke.

2 Stroke: better acceleration, no need to change oil, better fuel efficiency, lower priced, weighs less, quieter

4 Stroke: lower emissions, excellent fuel economy, electronic ignition systems, good acceleration, oil added to engine not fuel

Diesel Inboard Engines

These engines range in size and horsepower, and rely on compression for power. They are designed for boats over 35ft because they produce torque and weigh more than gas engines.

No carbon monoxide in cabins or back, non-explosive fuel, low running cost, excellent torque, long life expectancy

Gas Inboard Engines

These engines are used for a variety of different sizes and types of boats, and range in horsepower from 90HP to 1000HP. It is located in the middle of the boat with the drive running through the bottom of the boat to the propeller. The rudder is separate for steering.

Simple drive system, quite, hidden, lower maintenance, low running costs

Jet Propulsion

These systems do not include a propeller, which make it safer for water sports. They are inboard engines that take in water which flows through a pump that is powered by an impeller. The high pressure caused by this, propels the boat forward. However, steering is only possible when power is being applied. Things can also be sucked into the water intake, and shouldn’t be used in shallow water.

Stern Drive

This is often called an Inboard/Outboard and consists of an engine and drive connected through the transom of the boat. The engine is inside and the propulsion is outside of the boat. This drive can be trimmed up or down. There are many different types of functions depending on what they will be used for. They can be used with one or two propellers, as well as two drives on one boat with one or two propellers.

Low maintenance, ease of control and steering, used on gas or diesel engines, quiet

Choose the right boat for your favorite activity:

There are different types of boats for a variety of activities and intended use. Below are examples of what boats are used for with lists of boat types best suited for that activity. You will find that there are several boats that are intended for more that one activity.
